Intro to Taoist Qigong and Meditation Workshop
Saturday, April 28, 2018, 1:00 - 3:00PM
Taoism is the Chinese philosophy and spiritual tradition that focusses on nature, spontaneity, and the skill of acting without struggle in the world. Qigong is Chinese yoga that uses low-impact exercises drawn from Taoism as well as from Buddhism, traditional Chinese health practices, and Asian martial arts traditions.
In this workshop, we will explore Taoist moving exercises and meditation techniques. We will begin with simple qigong warm-up exercises and then we will do various movement forms to stretch and condition the body. These moving practices are vigorous enough to make you sweat, but they can be done in modified ways that are appropriate for many different kinds of body.
We will then experience a very traditional Taoist practice called the Microcosmic Orbit meditation that draws on traditional Chinese medicine and its visions of body, mind, and cosmos. The Microcosmic Orbit is a simple, easy-to-do meditation that can be a gateway into mindfulness practice for beginners or it can be a technique that complements an established meditation practice. This workshop is appropriate for beginners and people with previous qigong experience. No yoga mat or any kind of special equipment is needed. Just bring yourself!
This workshop is led by Steven Geisz, Ph.D. Steve is a Certified Full Instructor in the Healing Tao qigong system of Mantak Chia, a student in the multi-year qigong-teacher-training program of the Colorado- and San Diego-based qigong teacher Ken Cohen, a 500-hour registered yoga teacher (RYT 500), and a philosophy professor.
