This free educational clinic is for kids, new teen drivers and all teenagers' 8 to 99 years old! This hand-on, under-the-hood class gives children the chance to learn car basics and car and roadside safety. Parents, Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles are all invited to join your children to get informed and empowered about their cars. The Murphy Auto Museum is proud to host this informative clinic and thrilled to have Steve Ford, "The Car Guy®" on our team and thank him for volunteering his time to Murphy's Lab.
Car Clinic Topics:
1. WHAT'S IN THE HOOD?
Tour and explanation of the 'under-the-hood' space on a modern car or truck:
What, where and why the 'major' components are, including radiator, alternator, air-conditioning compressor, brake system/master cylinder belt(s), hoses, air cleaner, smaller and bigger electrical wires, engine and transmission. Summary discussion w/Q&A .
2. HOW & WHY: PREVENTIVE-MAINTENANCE CHECKS
How, where and when the primary fluids and preventive maintenance checks of main "preventive" under-hood checks and inspections are and "how to" check oil, coolant level, power-steering fluid level, wiper/washer fluid level, and brake master cylinder fluid level.
3. HOW TO CHANGE A FLAT TIRE
What, how and why explanation of tires, how tires are constructed and how tires can be damaged and cause roadside breakdowns.
Demonstration of "how to" locate, identify, utilize and be comfortably familiar and prepared for "changing a flat tire" -- including safety precautions, jack use, lug wrench and wheel removal/installation procedure and tips.
Discussion and Q&A
Review of the 'how-to' steps of the day's class on the under-hood and roadside emergency info - and conclusion of class/clinic.
