SONGWRITERS IN THE ROUND XXI
Hosted by Gillian Nicola
Featuring: The Lifers, Mike Kerr, Chelsea Reed
WEDNESDAY APRIL 25TH, 2018 @ 8PM
The Painted Lady (218 OSSINGTON AVE., TORONTO)
Never been to an In The Round? These concerts focus on the stories behind the music, and the songs themselves. The music is stripped back to allow listeners to really experience the songs at the most authentic level. What it also means is that we won't be having 'sets' per se - all four songwriters will be on stage together the whole time!
Gillian Nicola (Host)
The first thing that strikes listeners about Hamilton’s Gillian Nicola is the strength of her vocals. This rising singer/songwriter calls on influences of folk, rock and alt-country to bring a sound both unique to her and that honours her diverse taste.
The Lifers, led by sisters Liv and Anita Cazzola, are an art-folk/rock collective from Guelph, Ontario. Their intertwined voices dynamically convey vulnerability and strength. Softly plucked strings, accordion swells, and lush cello and upright bass arrangements give way to rip-roaring drums, soaring melodies and overdriven frenetic strums. Their stories juxtapose tenderness and explosive energy, sometimes within a single breath. The Lifers explore notions of home, family and community, highlighting the beauty, vulnerability and power of nature, challenging both genre and audience.
Mike Kerr is a wild flatpicker and ambitious country songwriter of Canadian heritage and American citizenship. During his time at Berklee College of Music in Boston and in over 10 years of performing, he's lived his life through many historical and contemporary musical styles. Always curious to dig up not only a song's history, but the shape of the world at the time, Mike plays passionately and openly while interpreting the great guitar players of the past. A Danny Gatton lick or Django Reinhardt tune is never far from his fingertips.
Australian born, Canadian based singer/songwriter/composer Chelsea Reed announces her highly anticipated debut album, a year and a half in the making. The self-titled album is Chelsea’s first release in over 3 years. Her debut EP, recorded in Sydney, Australia with producer Josh Schuberth (Josh Pyke, Dustin Tebbutt) and released in 2013, received critical acclaim and two singles ‘Snow Covered Hill’ and ‘I Want the World’ were on rotation across Australian community radio as well as Triple J Unearthed.
