Autumn Sonata is Bergman’s late-career chamber piece, depicting an intense mother daughter drama—a famed classical pianist (Ingrid Bergman) visits her neglected daughters (Liv Ullman; Lena Nyman) for the first time in years.

The story unravels with ferocious intensity alongside the deceivingly warm autumn hues of Sven Nykvist’s cinematography. This tale of physical and moral fragilities features the first and only collaboration between two Swedish cinematic titans sharing the same last name—Ingmar Bergman and Ingrid Bergman (of Casablanca fame). By the time of filming, Ingrid Bergman had already been diagnosed with terminal cancer. This role would be her last performance on the big screen, earning her a final Oscar nomination.
