Alder Lights formed in 2013 in Billings, MT as a creative outlet for singer Jake Goldberg and Marcus Barkac. There was no intention to form a band or to play shows, the idea was to simply learn some songs and have fun playing them on the weekends. It wasn't long before doing more than that became the goal. A name for the group was decided and original songs began to form in their jam sessions. The name Alder Lights was intentionally decided on with no meaning behind the name. The idea of having a name that may not be automatically associated with an experience, meaning, or genre suited them. Influences come from singer/songwriter, pop, alternative, rock, metal, rap, hip hop, and everything in between. Alder Lights wants listeners to expect anything and everything in their songs, merchandise, and live performances.
Jake and Marcus' passion for the group grew as more and more songs began to form so in June of 2015, the recording process began. The first album, Here's To Fate, was recording in a friend's studio in Billings, MT. Matt Blakeslee engineered and produced the album. Matt teamed up with Jordan Steingraber to mix and master the songs. Throughout this time, a couple different members joined and left as Jake and Marcus continued to mold the overall vision and goal for the band. Right around the time of recording, bassist Kaleb Barkac joined as a live member. He started playing keys and in January 2016 he became an official member and switched to playing bass.
May 7, 2016 Alder Lights released 'Here's To Fate' to a nearly sold out crowd in their hometown. With overwhelming support, planning for the next stage began. While playing a small handful of shows throughout that year, most was spent rehearsing and planning for 2017. In 2017, Alder Lights officially decided to transition to a 3 piece band as Jake, Marcus, and Kaleb. The three made significant changes to their jobs and lifestyles to free up time and money to purchase a van and trailer. They’ve spent their summer driving to a different city in the Montana/Wyoming area to play shows for new audiences while still working 40 hour work weeks at home. Once summer wraps up, their focus will shift to writing and preparing to take even larger steps forward in 2018 including a new album...
