The Root Slam Presents:
A FREE open mic & poetry slam venue located at MLK Cafe in North Oakland! Join us for a night of poetry Friday, April 13th from 7-10PM! 18+ with ID. The Root Slam happens every 2nd and 4th Friday of the month!
The Root Slam’s mission is to create an inclusive and socially just space to promote the artistic growth of the Bay Area poetry community.
We want to be a place where poetry, creativity, and innovation thrive and artists support and challenge one another to grow. We encourage participants to bring new work and develop it to the point of excellence. We are guided by values centering the voices of Black, indigenous, and people of color artists; queer, trans, gender non-conforming, femme, and women poets; working class/low-income, disabled, im/migrant and undocumented folks.
The venue is just two blocks from MacArthur BART, and offers food & drink, music, and a free, dynamic night of poetry every 2nd & 4th Friday of the month!

7:30pm-10pm: Team Finals Poetry Slam
**Note: There will be NO open Mic on 4/13 due to team qualifying slams. Still come through! Support the poets!
The Finals slam is comprised of the top poets who have been competing since September and interested in representing The Root Slam at the National Poetry Slam in August. There will be eight qualifying poets and two rounds of poetry. The top five highest scoring poets will represent the 2018 Root Slam Team.
