A Canadian fave and regularly ranked as one of the creepiest ghost films ever made, The Royal is proud to present the Canadian premiere of the new 4K restoration of THE CHANGELING (1980), courtesy of Severin Films and the American Genre Film Archive!
A chilling horror flick with a distinguished cast led by A+ magnificent Oscar winner George C. Scott (plus his real-life wife Trish Van Devere), THE CHANGELING stars Scott as John Russell, an award-winning and accomplished pianist, composer and lecturer. Having seen his wife and child mown down by a skidding truck in a snowy opening sequence, Russell looks to rebuild his battered life in Seattle (actually, Vancouver and Victoria, BC). He rents a large, ominous Victorian mansion to be alone for awhile.
It isn’t long before Russell is terrorized by a series of ghostly goings-on and eerie unexplained phenomena, and attempts to unravel the mystery of the previous owners. The camera slowly tracks everywhere through the house, using prolonged sweeps that build up incredible tension. THE CHANGELING is all mood, character and subtle imagery – a bouncing ball here, a leaking tap there – and it is all the better for it. Though there are also shocks and superbly-orchestrated set pieces, including a famous, eerie séance.
Hungarian-born director Peter Medak (who replaced Donald “Demon Seed” Cammell) was rewarded in spades for his superb work – The Changeling picked up 7 Genie Awards, including sound and sound editing, art design, best foreign actor and actress, cinematography and best picture (the very first Best Canadian Film Genie ever!).
As much supernatural mystery as straight horror, THE CHANGELING is a class act and rightly regarded as a one of the best ghost stories ever put to film.
