Liven up your Tuesday nights & sing with the super friendly Unity Choir led by The Singing Elf, vocal tutor Rebecca McGarvie. We meet every Tuesday 7 – 9.15pm at the Jubilee Hall, in West Rainton, near Durham.
Unity Choir run specific Welcome Weeks for new singers to come along and try us out; learn how to sing, build confidence, meet new people and have fun singing in a group. No experience is necessary, it’s ideal for complete beginners as well as returning singers. We’re open to all adults (strictly 18+) and currently have around 20 members aged 25 – 90.
You can attend up to 3 of our rehearsals as a guest paying £7.50 per session. If you then decide to join the choir you pay a reduced rate of £6 per session, paid as a monthly fee of £24.
Please get in touch to BOOK YOUR PLACE at a welcome week.
WHO CAN JOIN THE CHOIR? Anyone who wants to have fun singing weekly in a group. It really is as simple as that. Don't worry if you aren't sure you can sing, lots of our singers join us as complete beginners often shy and unsure. If you’ve sung before you’ll have chance to brush up your skills and go on to challenge yourself if you wish to. All you need is a love of music and the desire to learn whilst having lots of fun! We have a great mix of ages with men and women from all walks of life. We are a safe inclusive place, everyone is welcomed equally and every voice is valued. There’s no audition, you don’t need to have any previous experience and you won't have to sing on your own.
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT? Escapism, laughter, friendship and musical joy! My upbeat sessions will take you away from the stresses of day to day life and leave you feeling energised and uplifted. Although you may feel unsure at the start, you will find it hard not to enjoy yourself and you’ll be surprised how quickly your confidence builds. Every week you’ll learn how to improve your vocal skills, develop technique and get to grips with singing in harmony. My teaching focuses on building confidence as individuals and as a group, in a supportive, non-judgemental environment where everyone can thrive.
WHAT WILL WE SING? A huge range of musical styles and pieces arranged for choirs. We will explore songs influenced by musical theatre, pop, rock, gospel, folk, traditional and contemporary music. We’ll learn some acapella, some accompanied by piano and others with backing tracks. Each term we will work toward a performance and also take part in events in the local community. You'll get the dates well in advance to attend if you can and I’ll make sure we’re confidently prepared and performance ready. There will also be social nights, meals out, theatre trips, parties and lots more to enjoy as part of our community.
WHY SHOULD I JOIN? Singing in a group promotes physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. People join our choir for a whole host of reasons but the one thing they have in common is the love of singing and the personal boost it gives them. Some people have always wanted to learn to sing, to build their confidence or are returning after a long break. Some come along for personal reasons, following a life change or difficult time. Others because they just need a ‘night off’ each week to relax. Whatever your reasons, you will become part of super friendly group, make new friends and have fun trying new experiences.
HOW DO I GET INVOLVED? Get in touch to book a session as a guest and try us out. You’ll pay £7.50 on the door weekly and have 3 sessions to decide if you want to become a member. Then we’ll ask you to commit to the rest of that term and pay monthly as a member.

ABOUT THE ELF: I’m Rebecca McGarvie and I’m The Singing Elf! I've sung all my life and my greatest passion is giving others the confidence to enjoy singing in a group. As a vocal tutor I’ve worked with hundreds of singers from shy beginners to veteran divas. I previously ran a performing arts academy including a large adult community choir and have lots of experience leading groups in local communities. After recently taking a break from teaching, I’m now back spreading my love for singing in a new way through my social Singing & Prosecco events, short courses, workshops and my brand new community choir. Still not sure it’s for you? Come along & try for your’elf!
