Gradual takes the melodies of Crowded House, the fury of Midnight Oil, the pub rock conviction of Matt Finish and the orchestration of late-era The Beatles, and then distils and channels these influences into its own unique sound. Gradual’s songs tell stories we can all relate to, in the true tradition of classic Australian rock, but with a fresh perspective.
Lead singer/songwriter/guitarist Brian Baker’s credentials include writing and performing with Split Enz’s Eddie Rayner, penning movie scores, touring with the B52s as a member of The Makers and having an Australian Top 20 single with The Ones.
Guitarist David Carr is one of Australia’s most sought after engineers and producers. He has toured with Deborah Conway, was a member of Seven Stories, mixed Russell Morris’s ARIA winning ‘Shark Mouth’ album and produced recordings by Taxiride, Skipping Girl Vinegar, Kiss Chasey and Guy Sebastian.
Bassist Darren Trott is a multi-instrumentalist, who also fronts legendary blues band HouseWreckers as lead singer and lead guitarist singer, while other side projects include Third Best Friend and Who AU.
Carolyn Oates has recently joined Gradual as the band's drummer. Carolyn is also a multi-instrumentalist, having released her widely acclaimed album "In The Moment" in 2016, performing as acoustic guitarist for Vika & Linda Bull’s band and exploring her passion for electronica with her Alpha Loopy side project.
Gradual's debut 'For Love' EP was released in 2015, receiving widespread airplay across the country. In 2017 the band filmed and released three videos, shot in Belgrave's main street, at an exclusive cinema event in support of Beyondblue. Their song "We Fall Slowly" has been licensed and will appear in the upcoming US movie 'Family Values'.
Gradual has performed at a number of festivals and has opened for Mental As Anything and Shannon Noll, with upcoming supports in 2018 for Taxiride and Blood Sweat and Beers (featuring members of Rose Tattoo , AC/DC and The Angels).
The latest single 'Open Up Your Heart' sees Gradual delivering a quintessential Australian song, with an infectious hook and a rhythm designed to have everyone up and dancing.
