Art(ists) on the Verge 9 features new work from five Minnesota-based artists. Created over the course of a year during an intensive fellowship, the practices represented here often fall outside of and in between the traditional notions of media or disciplines. Supporting work such as this is one of the fundamental concepts that define the mission of the Art(ists) on the Verge Fellowship for emerging artists.

AoV9 is the first program presented inside the Soap Factory’s building since renovations started in 2017 and will provide visitors a preview of the building’s exciting changes. This exhibition also marks the 6th year of collaboration between Northern Lights.mn and the Soap Factory to present Art(ists) on the Verge.

Opening Reception: May 5th, 2018 from 7pm -11pm

Exhibition On View: May 5th - June

Gallery hours: Wed - Sun, 12pm - 8pm

About the Art(ists) on the Verge 9 Artists

Maxwell Hoaglund
We have become acculturated to a world of artificial support. Facebook asks us how we’re feeling. Alexa plays the music we need. Siri gets us there. Max Hoagland’s The Shallows is a sophisticated acting, primitive looking machine that lays bare such “choices” as an infinitely accumulating set of data points about us, which are not owned or controlled by us, but which increasingly define the world we are presented to act in. We must ask why.

Meena Mangalvedhekar
Intercropping is an agricultural strategy to plant between the primary crops and optimizes watering, soil nutrients, field labor and yearly yield through greater biodiversity. Meena Mangalvedhekar’s installation of a “farm” of networked screens explores intercropping as means to increase the diversity and nutritional content of the social media we produce and consume as farmers in the digital ecosystem.

Areca Roe
Our actions today have consequences that may not be clear for generations. With Founder Effect Areca Roe has created an immersive, 360 degree video field guide to the future that imagines with both the wonder of discovery and a sickening horror of recognition some of the adaptations animals might have made due to climate change, pollution and deforestation.

Stephanie Lynn Rogers
The seeds of Stephanie Lynn Rogers’ Security Blanket, a series of comforting, DIY, anti-surveillance, speculative design objects, are stories of government harassment and overreach from the Civil Rights movement to the 2008 Republican National Convention. In an age of social media self-surveillance - and continued government overreach - what is the role of privacy and what does it mean to feel safe?

Ziyang Wu
Ziyang Wu writes: “I believe that the multicultural, subversive, and resistant spirit of carnival has the power to destroy hypocritical systems of control.” Hop aboard Smarter City 2, a phantasmagoric interactive video installation of a future 洛杉京Los Jing (LA-Beighing) subway stop, to explore the lives of a cast of outlandish straphangers whose data behind their shiny exteriors hint at how the virtual world and data increasingly influences human consciousness on both a macro and micro scale.
