To look at and to see something are very different actions, especially in terms of understanding and reading the artwork before us. For modern eyes, most of the hidden, coded messages that the artists leave behind actually go unnoticed, unrecognised and neglected.
The Wallace Collection is particularly strong in Dutch and Flemish paintings of the seventeenth century and in eighteenth and nineteenth-century French paintings, though there are also outstanding works by English, Italian and Spanish artists.
We are going through these works together and discover answers to questions such as:
What does the artwork say?
Is the artist hiding a deeper message within the superficial image?
We certainly believe in your ability to recognise the subject, the tonal and emotional charge of each artwork, but aren’t you curious to go beyond that?
