To Spill My Husband's Blood is a foray into the dark world of traditional murder ballads. Julia Hobart (Mama Caught Fire) rewrites historical ballads from the perspective of the victims, honoring the real women who were murdered. Grounded in old time instrumentation, the music is a modern, feminist response to American folk tradition. To Spill My Husband's Blood seeks to uncover what has been obscured by the makers of history: glimpses of the bold, peculiar, and creative personalities of women lost to violence.
Hobart is joined by an all-star cast of musicians, including Rachel Calvert (Barbaro, Beneath the Crow), Brianna Lane (Brianna Lane Music), Sarah Larsson (The Lacewings, The Nightingale Trio), Rina Rossi (Hello Heartache, Steam Machine), and backing vocalists Molly Sowash and Abigail Tuominen (Mama Caught Fire).
Steam Machine plays music from the transitional era between old-time and bluegrass, highlighting unique and beautiful Midwestern repertoire alongside tunes and songs from Appalachia. Their music combines clean, powerful fiddling with driving three finger banjo, raw unprocessed vocals, and a rhythm section that keeps your tractor going.
