Leon (15) – 1995, France 110 mins, Colour

Dir: Luc Besson

Cast: Jean Reno, Gary Oldman, Natalie Portman

Featuring the most unhinged performance in Gary Oldman’s illustrious career of unhinged characters, Leon was the first foray by Parisian director Luc Besson into the American market and he took his favourite starring actor, Jean Reno (most famously from Subway and The Big Blue), with him to the Big Apple. With a hint of John Cassavetes’ Gloria in the set up it also provided the big screen introduction for the very young but extra-ordinary Natalie Portman.

Leon is a deadly and elusive killer. He lives a routine life, alone in New York with just his plant for company, until the day twelve year-old Mathilda rings his doorbell in desperation and so becomes part of his life. Mathilda has just narrowly escaped being murdered along with her parents and baby brother by ruthless, corrupt cop Stansfield (Gary Oldman) and his colleagues. Leon reluctantly takes Mathilda under his wing, and the two go on the run. But Mathilda wants revenge, and as she soon discovers, Leon can teach her how to exact it.

Doors open for fine wines and all manner of drinks at 7pm. Film starts at 8pm
