Pilates is a system of exercises created by Joseph Pilates to rehabilitate and strengthen the body, particularly the muscles of the back, abdomen, and pelvis. It emphasizes core strength, stability, flexibility, and awareness through a focus on technique and control. Pilates practitioners find it helps immensely with back pain, while elite athletes find it complements their sports training and enables conditioning while nursing injuries. Everyone and anyone can do Pilates, as it is easily modifiable for any level of fitness. Individuals should wear comfortable, stretchy clothing like yoga wear and feel free to bring a mat and/or towel.
