8 Part Workshop Series
Stress, Stress, Stress. It is everywhere and colors much of what we do. Many of us are so accustomed to living with stress, that we don’t even recognize how it affects our bodies, minds, communications and relationships. Mindfulness keeps popping up as a remedy to help us deal with stress. The skill of mediation is most easily learned through guidance and practice. The meditation practices are straightforward. However, we are asked to relearn much of how we relate to ourselves – which can be challenging. As we train and retrain our minds and bodies, we begin to experience a greater sense of relaxation, peace and connection.
This course is appropriate for those who do not have a meditation practice and for those who are relatively new to meditation. It consists of eight weekly two-hour classes and will provide step by step guidance on the practice of mindfulness. Several different mediation techniques will be introduced. The course format includes talks, discussions and guided meditations. Specific topics to be presented include:
• What is meditation?
• What is mindfulness and how does it relate to meditation?
• The physiologic basis of the stress response
• The science behind the body’s response to meditation
• Techniques to relax the mind and body
• How to develop a daily mediation practice
• Challenges to developing a meditation practice
• Using mindfulness in everyday life
The talks and meditations will be recorded and made available to the students.
