Type design is many things: letter – word – text – type family. Historical and practical elements play an important role together with aesthetics and design, from brief to finished font.
With the new type format Variable Font, it is “easy” to generate a huge type family from few masters. But will it impact the design process, so we end up with less interesting and varied type designs?
Often families with black sheeps and misfits are more interesting than families where everybody agrees. Follow the rules and become predictable.
Trine Rask will talk about her work in type design, from handmade to geometric.
During the workshop, Trine will share two sets of very different letters, for example, two A’s. It is expected of the participants that they draw the "child" of the two A’s - to introduce the concept of font families in a playful way. Subsequently, you can draw more letters so that it forms a word including the new A.
