We live in a time when virtual and augmented reality have become significant outlets for entertainment, education, training, therapy, and beyond. These alternate forms of experiencing life create less distinction between the tangible (what we can touch) and the abstract (existing in thought), challenging our dominant sense of reality and how it functions within our everyday lives.

Can’t Touch This will be the Melton Gallery’s first-ever all virtual and augmented reality exhibit. No physical media will be on display. With artwork created by the UCO Design faculty, this exhibit showcases how designers with different specializations are using digital image creation and presentation tools. Some of these designers are exploring the potential of relatively new technologies like VR/AR; others are revisiting old technologies in new ways or simply showing how they create work with the help of digital tools. The goal is to demonstrate the degree to which virtual processes and artifacts have changed how work is conceived, made, and displayed. Not only can the viewer not touch the work, but neither did the maker. Ceci n'est pas une pipe.
