Our 'Meet the Plant' Series is an introduction to plant families of important agricultural and cultural crop plants. Each month, we will discuss the natural history, center of origin, phytochemistry, and agricultural history of different species within the plant family. The topic for this date is the plant family of Cucurbitaceae. This family includes crops such as squash, pumpkin, zucchini, some gourds, cucumber, melon, luffa, calabash, and watermelon. The presenter is Robert Kluson, Ph.D., agriculture and natural resources agent.
