Bells will ring out across the country at 6:01 p.m. central time (7:01 p.m. eastern time) to mark the moment Martin Luther King Jr. was shot as he stood on a balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. Even though he is remembered most for his civil rights work, King also campaigned for economic justice, starting the Poor People's Campaign in 1968. In fact, he was in Memphis at the behest of sanitation workers whose strike for better working conditions -- two garbage collectors had been killed on the job -- was not gaining attention or traction.
