Urdhva Dhanurasana, also known as Upward Bow or Wheel pose, is an iconic back-bend in the yoga repertoire. For many people it represents the openness they desire when they first approach a yoga practise, however too often the physical and emotional feeling of this pose doesn’t match the freedom of the shape. As we often practise Upward Bow in a Vinyasa class, it is important to give it the attention it requires, so that we can start to access it on a safer and more aware level.

Why are backbends such an important thing to practise?

Backbends create the opposite movement of so many of our day to day activities, things like typing, texting, driving and sitting, which encourage the body into permanent flexion. To much flexing can affect our posture, ability to breath well, not to mention dull our overall energy levels. These are all vital things for living well and feeling great. As a healthy spine needs to be flexible in all directions, a daily dose of back bending can start to strengthen the back of the body and open the front, actions that will help you to re-align posture, open your chest and lungs and feel more energised and connected as a whole.


The first hour will be a slow and precise vinyasa, taking time to open the shoulders, upper back and front of the body, focusing on the quadriceps and hip flexors, so that when we approach the pose, we are open both mentally and physically.

In the second hour, we will look more closely at Upward Bow, using several variations and modifications to find access on a new level. This part of the class will move slowly with plenty of time for rest and discussion.

The last 30-45 minutes of the workshop will work towards gently releasing your spine back to neutral and winding down with a lengthy Savasana.

How to focus on creating even sensation through the whole pose, so that rather than going deep, you find balance and support
How to use yoga props to support you in your own practise
How to step out of the mind and into the heart space
