Dr. Amy Appleford teaches in the English Department at Boston University. Her recent book, Learning to Die in London, 1380-1540, examines how an educated awareness of death and mortality shaped not only individuals and families but also practices of cultural memory, the building of institutions, and the government of the city itself.
