Treasures and Tea: Typographic Ornaments of The Girl’s Own and
The Boy’s Own Annuals, 1880-1905
Gillian Mothersill, Associate Professor, School of Graphic Communications Management, Ryerson University
In the late Victorian period, and continuing for more than three-quarters of a century, The Girl's Own Paper and The Boy's Own Paper provided youth with a magazine full of stories, poetry, music, and articles. Meant to entertain and to educate, these magazines were richly illustrated with strong visual elements including ornamental letters. In this talk, Professor Mothersill will discuss her research to identify decorative features in the magazines, and to record the production world of Victorian illustrators and wood engravers.
Treasures and Tea brings together the campus and the community to explore and share highlights from Special Collections and University Archives. Refreshments follow the informal talks.
