In Venezuela, the state of Human Rights is getting worse by the day. Since coming to power, Maduro has advanced the authoritarian legacy of his predecessor Chavez through jailing political opposition, responding to protest with government violence and stripping the opposition-led legislature of its power. Although the situation is dire, some are fighting back.

Foro Penal is a Venezuelan human rights organization, composed of more than 100 well-known lawyers and a group of over 4.000 Human Rights activists, who dedicate their time and expertise to provide legal assistance for those without financial resources who are victims of Human Rights violations. As the executive director of Foro Penal, Alfredo Romero will share his view on the situation of Human Rights in Venezuela.

The event is presented by Foro Penal, Civil Rights Defenders, UU Faculty of Law, Uppsala Forum on Democracy, Peace and Justice and the Uppsala Association of Foreign Affairs.

Before founding Foro Penal, Mr. Romero worked as a lawyer, providing legal assistance to those affected the increasingly authoritarian leadership in Venezuela.
