Four musicians approach Shostakovich’ songs "From Jewish Folk Poetry" from an angle as unusual as self-evident: from the Yiddish poetry the pieces originate in.
Intrigued by the claim that the songs were meant to be singable in Yiddish, Sára Gutvill, a singer of both classical repertoire and Yiddish songs, decided to give it a try.
The result is a program with Shostakovich’ songs sung in Yiddish, surrounded by traditional settings of the Yiddish poems as well as compositions by Maurice Ravel, Darius Milhaud and Viktor Ullmann.
