Celebrate Earth Day In Ojai with an Herb Walk on the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy’s Ventura River Preserve with me and a friendly group of like-minded nature lovers and students of the Earth. This walk will take place on Sunday, April 22, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. followed by an optional lunch gathering at Farmer and the Cook Cafe in Meiners Oaks for further discussion, sharing and camaraderie.
On this walk, we will identify, demonstrate and discuss the many uses of wild plants for foragers, herbalists, and naturalists seeking out plants for food, first aid, home remedies, survival, crafts, ceremony and more. Poisonous plants will also be identified.
Trailside discussion will include humankind’s role in the ecological balance, sustainable foraging, fire ecology, Chumash plant uses, and other topics generated by the participants. We will meet at the Riverview Trailhead on Rice Road in Meiners Oaks just south of the intersection of Rice and El Roblar Drive. Once we walk down a short but steep hill into the river bottom, this will be an easy-paced walk of about 1.5 miles on a level trail, suitable for hikers of all abilities, returning to the trailhead at 12 noon.
The cost for this walk is $20 for adults, $15 for seniors 62 and older, and $10 for students 13-18. Kids 5-12 can go free, one per adult, by prior arrangement. Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. No dogs or smoking, please. Payment by cash or check is accepted on the morning of the walk.
Registration at HerbWalks.com or 805-646-6281. There is no prepayment required, just a promise to notify me in a timely fashion if your plans change. Registrants will receive a confirmation email several days before with all necessary info and a follow-up email afterwards with plant list and other info.
Please note: This hike will go on RAIN OR SHINE with the exception of a heavy downpour that morning and/or a 100% chance of heavy rain that day.
