About the Shows
Summer Independent
Sister Act
For students grade 10 to age 20

Sister Act is the feel-good musical comedy smash based on the hit 1992 film that has audiences jumping to their feet! Featuring original music by Tony- and eight-time Oscar winner, Alan Menken (Newsies, Beauty and the Beast, Little Shop of Horrors), this uplifting musical was nominated for five Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

When disco diva, Deloris Van Cartier, witnesses a murder, she is put in protective custody in the one place the cops are sure she won't be a found: a convent! Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and uptight Mother Superior. Using her unique disco moves and singing talent to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church and community but, in doing so, blows her cover. Soon, the gang is giving chase, only to find them up against Deloris and the power of her newly found sisterhood."- MTI

Sister Act includes large gospel numbers with larger than life dance for performers ready to challenge themselves. Cast size is 16-20. An ensemble-based cast, there are several large roles for women and many strong, featured roles for both men and women. The upbeat modern score will challenge new and experienced singers alike.

Shrek the Musical
For students grade 3 to age 18

"Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film, Shrek The Musical is a Tony Award-winning fairy tale adventure, featuring all new songs from Jeanine Tesori (Thoroughly Modern Millie; Caroline, or Change) and a sidesplitting book by David Lindsay-Abaire. Shrek brings all the beloved characters you know from the film to life on stage and proves there's more to the story than meets the ears.

"Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek...." And thus begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Throw in a short-tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you've got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there's one on hand... and his name is Shrek." - MTI

Shrek is an exciting for KIDSTAGE this year. This show has a handful of exciting principal roles, as well as a featured ensemble. There are also several large dance numbers. Total cast size will be 40-45. The musical theatre score provides opportunities and challenges for both new and experienced singers.
