Cultivating the Low Back
A four week series with Tracy James, E-RYT200, LMT
Thursday Nights 7:30-9:00pm; May 10, 17, 24 & 31
4 Sessions $90; 1 Session $25

Lower back pain is a leading cause of disability worldwide, with 3 out of 4 patients experiencing regular recurrence of symptoms ranging from lumbar pain to neck and shoulder pain, TMJ dysfunction, digestive disorders, insomnia, and depression. Whether you are already experiencing low back pain or dysfuction or are interested in maintaining a healthy lumbar spine, education is key to working with this modern epidemic.

This informative workshop series will look closely at the biomechanics of the low back with emphasis on the supporting structures of the feet, legs, hips, and abdominal core. Featuring therapeutic movements and supported asanas appropriate for beginning as well as seasoned practitioners, each session will explore yoga practices that can contribute to the cultivation of a strong, supported spine.

WK 1: Coming to Ground: Featuring SATYA practices on the floor for restoring sensory awareness and joint mobility to hips, sacrum, and spine.

WK 2: Rooting to Rise: Featuring practices to establish a strong foundation with the earth on the way to standing poses. We will explore a variety of standing asanas modified for floor practice and learn what it means to "ground down to rise up".

WK 3: Growing Upwards: Featuring standing practices for the low back. An upward expansion of postures covered in week two, including modifications and the support of props. We will look closely at how to use the feet, legs, and abdominal core to strengthen and support the lower back in standing asanas.

WK 4: Digging Deeper: Featuring seated and restorative poses to rest the organic body. Our final session will conclude with a brief overview of contemplative practices including a beginner’s pranayama exercise and a short meditation.
