Aesthetics of New Urban Technologies: Towards Aesthetic Sustainability in Urban Environments.
Sanna Lehtinen is a Postdoctoral Researcher at HELSUS (Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science) and Faculty of Art, University of Helsinki. She teaches aesthetics and environmental thinking also at Aalto University. Her current research focuses on aesthetic sustainability and urban futures. She writes on her talk:
“Our current urban lifeworld is becoming increasingly dependent on technologies that affect in many ways how we live our everyday life. As a result of this, everyday experiences are becoming exceedingly technology-mediated. According to the view proposed here, technology should be seen as an agent of change in the context of urban environments. The focus is on experiential change and how technologies either suppress or sustain certain types of experiences: they contribute to the aesthetic sustainability of the urban environment. Aesthetics offers thus a relevant framework for assessing how the urban lifeworld becomes processed in human experience and actions and how new technologies contribute to this.”
