Salt Lake City poetry slam scene will be sending a team to represent Salt Lake at the National Poetry Slam! With the top 2 spots from Salt City Slam finals secured. It’s time to compete for the remaining 3 spots! The top 2 competitors of Sugar Slam will be members of Salt Lake's official unified poetry slam team! And there will be a HEAD TO HEAD challenge for the 5th spot. These poets have been competing all year to earn enough season points to take their place here, at finals stage. These poets are the best of the best spoken word artists in the salt lake valley!

Before the slam kicks off, we'll have our featured performance by Salt City Slam Champions, TaneshaNicole and José Soto!

José Soto is a poet, student, and dog lover. As a Venezuelan immigrant José’s poetry works to speak to several intersections of cultural identity. His work has been featured on Button Poetry, Write About Now, and The Huffington Post. He is currently working on getting his Bachelors in both English and Communication from the University of Utah, and with his spare time he can be found trying to catch up on The Get Down with his beagle, Rufus.
TaneshaNicole is a senior studying Creative Writing at Westminster College. Tanesha is likely more interested in your cat or your zodiac sign than actually talking to people. They are a Pisces Sun with a Capricorn Moon that means something to them. Outside of school, Tanesha can be found writing and performing poetry or hosting their slam at Watchtower Cafe. TaneshaNicole began slam in 2014 and has since gone on to represent Salt Lake City in national competitions including IWPS and CUPSI. They attended the Women of the World Poetry Slam in 2016 where they were a finalist and ranked 9th in the world. Tanesha was a speaker for the 2015-2016 Bruin Voices Series at Salt Lake Community College, spoke during the 2016 TEDxWestminsterCollegeSLC on using art as a form of activism. Tanesha’s work outside of slam includes community organizing, student leadership, and research. Their work has appeared or is forthcoming in Button Poetry, Write About Now, Voicemail Poems, peculiar, and an anthology entitled Sycorax's Daughters.
