April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, and Westermeier Martin Dental Care is marking the occasion with a special tribute to beloved Buffalo athlete, Jim Kelly.
Jim Kelly is a former NFL quarterback and a Pro Football Hall of Famer who spent the entirety of his NFL career with the Buffalo Bills. Mr. Kelly, who is a patient and personal friend to those of us at Westermeier Martin, recently announced that his oral cancer has returned.
In honor of Mr. Kelly and his brave fight against squamous cell carcinoma, Westermeier Martin Dental Care will offer free oral cancer screenings at its Amherst and East Aurora offices from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 12. This day is significant, as Jim Kelly proudly sported the #12 jersey during his 11 seasons with the Bills.
According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, nearly 50,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. Still, dental professionals say awareness of the disease remains low.
“Many people falsely believe that oral cancer is only associated with smoking and tobacco use. Jim Kelly is a perfect example of the fact that this disease can strike even the healthiest individuals,” Dr. Scott Westermeier, co-founder of Westermeier Martin Dental, said. “We stand with our friend Mr. Kelly in his battle against oral cancer and hope that his story will motivate patients to get screened, as early detection is critical.”
Screenings will be held at the East Aurora office, located at 950 Main Street and the Amherst office, located at 3500 Sheridan Drive. Patients will be seen on a walk-in basis; no appointment is necessary.
