“Is ours not a strange culture that focuses so much attention on childbirth–virtually all of it based on anxiety and fear–and so little on the crucial time after birth, when patterns are established that will affect the individual and the family for decades?”
- Suzanne Arms
Most traditional cultures have evolved with customs and practices that ensure that mothers get the physical, emotional, nutritional, social and spiritual care and support they need in order to fully heal and transition after giving birth. Becoming a mother is often more intense for woman than childbirth. The journey to becoming a mother is a process that requires woven layers of support and care. Intact cultures around the world have rituals and practices that recognize this time as a sacred rite of passage as well as a delicate time requiring extra care. In other cultures around the world there is a deeper understanding of how crucial the postpartum period is for a woman's long term health. It is understood that a woman's first 40 days postpartum affects her next 40 years. It is interesting that the cultures who have the lowest incidences of postpartum mood disorders all have these rituals and practices that provide support and care for new mothers.
We are on a mission to integrate informed Postpartum care, rituals, practices and understanding of this sensitive time back into our culture and our families!
This retreat is for women who are currently pregnant preparing for the postpartum time. It is for woman who have recently given birth and are realizing they need or needed more support and education about this time, as well as for woman who have given birth no matter how long ago (because we are postpartum for life) and would like to recieve more understanding, healing and care for their postpartum period. Babies of course are welcome!
