Join Us April 5th from 5:30-7:30 at Williamsburg Art Gallery for the Opening of “Pioneer Women of NASA”
The exhibition, by Jamestown High School senior Marie-Helena Peeters, features portraits of women who work at NASA. The paintings, done in black and white acrylic paint, highlight the important work of real women scientists and engineers. Its goal is to encourage girls to pursue careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) fields.
This biographical portrait series transmits the inspiring stories and advice of 10 women, ranging from Cathy Mangum, Associate Director of NASA Langley Research Center to Sabrina Thompson, aerospace engineer at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.
The Women of NASA
This project started in the summer of 2017. Marie-Helena traveled to NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and NASA’s Langley Research Center, interviewing the women of NASA. She took photographs of the women, which she used to create the painted portraits. Through this experience, she received advice from these 10 inspiring women:

Marie-Helena is a senior at Jamestown High School. Painting is a long family tradition. Her older sister, Anne-Sophie, studied fine arts at the University of Virginia, and is a painter living in Rome, Italy. They have a direct family connection to the Flemish seventeenth-century Peeters painters in Belgium.
An Honors Project is a requirement for the WJCC Honors Program. The requirements of the Honors Programs include: the completion of five Advanced Placement courses, the completion of a four-course sequence in a global language, community service of at least 25 hours, and an Honors Project. Participants must submit a proposal for their project to the 13-person Division Honors Committee.
