Melanie Duckworth, ‘Mentoring Generously: The Key to Successful Leadership’

In her Mentoring Generously: The Key to Successful Leadership presentation, Dr. Melanie Duckworth will highlight those skills that are essential to business leaders who are missioned around increasing the global reach and reputation of their businesses; creating workplaces that spark ingenuity, an appetite for success, and a sense of accomplishment among employees; and foster goodwill and loyalty among members of the communities that are home to their businesses.

Today’s economy and tomorrow’s business growth requires the commitment of persons at all levels of the business ladder and effective leaders know how to inspire and harness such commitment to increase the success of their businesses and to mentor and support the development of future business leaders. Dr. Duckworth is an Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Nevada, Reno and the newly appointed Assistant Dean for Diversity and Inclusion for the College of Liberal Arts. In the context of directing the Health Risk and Traumatic Injury Research Group, Dr. Duckworth has been at the forefront of research addressing the employment and quality of life outcomes experienced by persons who have suffered serious physical and psychological injuries. She has co-authored any number of peer-reviewed journal publications and has served as lead editor for three internationally disseminated books addressing physical injury and psychological trauma. She is the faculty advisor for research projects that examine decision-making and risk engagement as a predictor of college students’ academic success. She is coeditor for the soon-to-be published volume titled Prejudice, Stigma, Privilege, and Oppression: A Behavioral Health Handbook.

In her current role as Assistant Dean for Diversity and Inclusion, and in her former role as Chair of the Faculty Senate Faculty Diversity Committee, Dr. Duckworth has distinguished herself as a savvy spokesperson and as a thought leader who is committed to cultural inclusion as a winning strategy for all public and private institutions. In recognition of the strength of her leadership and her interpersonal effectiveness in forwarding the University’s research, cultural inclusion, and community engagement mission, Dr. Duckworth received from President Marc Johnson in 2017 the first Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Leadership Award.
