Sat 4/28, Printmaking: Cyanotype printing, 2-5pm

In this class, we will introduce you to the beautiful art of cyanotype printing! This photographic process is also known as sun printing because the sun can be utilized as the main light source for your exposures (or a UV lamp works when the sun isn’t out, because it is Pittsburgh after all...). Cyanotype printing is unique in that it allows you to use real life objects to produce beautiful Prussian blue prints on both artist paper and fabric. We will lead you through the cyanotype print making process from start to finish, beginning with a discussion of the specific tools and supplies involved, as well as options for prepping your cyanotype solution, paper, and fabric. You will then experiment with exposures by using different objects to produce your unique prints. You’ll also have the option to use common household ingredients to tone your cyanotype different shades aside from the classic blue. Lastly, you will learn to rinse and dry out your prints so they are complete and ready to show!

The first half of this class will go over history, examples, how-to instruction, and demonstrations of the printing process. The last half of class will be dedicated to working with the instructor to print images, test different subjects and exposure times, troubleshoot your designs, and get creative! You will leave with at least 6-8 prints, including fabric pieces, as well as instructions and know-how to re-create this process at home.

Supplies Needed: None. We supply chemistry, paper, fabric, and supplies to print. Please wear clothing that you wouldn’t mind get stained/ruined. We will have aprons for you to wear. For cyanotype printing, we encourage you to bring objects from home, such as leaves, feathers, lace, or anything flat that has an interesting shape.

Usually have some additional cool or unique flowers that can tend to be a bit more expensive that you can buy separately if you really want to something dramatic.

The rules: Classes are for adults only, unless you email in to request permission. To cancel, move or change classes we do require a 72 hour cancellation or change in order to get a refund or move classes. Once past the 72 hour point, we have already locked in your space with the Teacher and supplies, which will be paid out to the Teacher no matter what. If you are using a gift certificate, or have any concerns, email us at workshoppghdiy@gmail.com, thanks! All classes take place at Workshop PGH at 5135 Penn Avenue in Garfield. Parking in metered until 6pm and is free Sundays. For open parking, we recommend Coral, Evaline or Winebiddle nearby. Feel free to BYO snacks and refreshment.
