Sun 5/6, Woodshop: DIY Wooden Bench, 11-3pm
TICKETS ARE AVAILABLE AT WORKSHOPPGH.COM
In this new Woodshop class, we guide you along over the day to make yourself a beautiful bench made from 2x4s. In all our woodshop classes we focus on using power tools that are accessible and fairly affordable to buy, simple projects for beginners and skill building with affordable tools you can get at Home Depot or Harbor Freight. You learn about:
-General shop & tool safety
-Measuring and using jigs/ stops
-Selecting wood and 2x4's for this class
-Cutting with a compound miter saw & chop saw
-Using nail guns/ air compressor
-Gluing, sanding with a variety of sanders
-Staining/ sealing for indoor or outdoor usage. (Outdoor benches require extra layers of polyurethane)
-Using a cordless 18v drill for support screws
Each of our classes is meant to deliver a great project and also be skill building to expand your knowledge of tools and techniques. We focus on DIY and design projects for everyone using power tools and a bit less on the fine woodworking end. So think Trading Spaces/ HGTV projects vs. Bob Villa/ This Old House. After all, it takes time and practice to become Tim the Toolman Taylor. The classes are great for beginners or folks with a little bit of experience. People who maybe want to do more around their house and want to get comfortable with tools and making projects at home.
Project specs: Students make a 4ft wide x 18-inch high bench and get stain, a brush & gloves to take home and finish it at your leisure in open ventilation. It weighs about 55-65lbs, so please be sure to arrange a friend to help you carry it in your home if needed. Teachers will help you load it into your car or ride when you leave class.
Supplies/ how to dress: This class requires long sleeves, safety glasses (we supply), sturdy shoes or boots (nothing open toe). If you would like to bring your own cordless 18v drill, feel free. We supply every student with an workshop screen printed tool apron to take home and tote to take home your stain & supplies. Feel free to bring any snacks or refreshments to class since it is 4-4.5 hours. All students are required to sign a waiver at class.
Teacher: Christopher James, Woodworker and Carpenter, started Port & Bow in Lawrenceville where he does furniture and home goods design, building, restoration, interior design. He can be found with his dog Ronin, riding motorcycles or seeing shows when he's not covered in sawdust.
Workshop policies: Classes are for adults only, unless you email in to request permission.
