INSTO Open Consulation Meeting
Due to its continuous growth and its many interlinkages with other sectors, sustainable tourism has been recognized globally as an enabling agent of change. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) reflect this recognition as well as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development 2017 (IY 2017), which prominently features the need for measurement in destinations as crucial element for an evidence-driven development of tourism that is based on a participatory approach, inclusiveness and timely monitoring.
To reach the ambitious goals of the global community, destinations carry an enormous responsibility in translating these objectives into local relevance. Within this, with their long-term commitment towards regular and timely measurement, tourism observatories play an important role in accelerating Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) Patterns at the local level, helping stakeholders to better understand and manage the impacts and development of the tourism sector through clear evidence.
With this year’s Global INSTO Meeting, UNWTO seeks to further support observatories and tourism stakeholders by offering an opportunity to openly engage, share and discuss views, new approaches, experiences and opportunities offered, by traditional and non-traditional data, in monitoring and assessing tourism impacts at the destination level. This meeting, scheduled at the end of the IY 2017, will therefore allow stakeholders to inspire and be inspired, in their journey towards more sustainability, fostering the continuous dialogue and learning process that is key for the sector to realize its potential as an enabling agent of change.
