Join Minnesota Sea Grant and documentary film producer Chad Freidrichs at the regional premiere of a new documentary chronicling one of the boldest, most-audacious - and largely untold - stories in Minnesota history. Stick around after the 96 minute screening for a panel discussion led by Sea Grant's Sharon Moen and author of "With Tomorrow in Mind" a book chronicling the life of Athelstan Spilhaus, designer of The Experimental City and initiator of Sea Grant.
Synopsis

THE EXPERIMENTAL CITY is a documentary about the Minnesota Experimental City project, a futuristic attempt to solve urban problems by creating a full-size city from scratch in the isolated woods of northern Minnesota.

At the heart of the story is renowned scientist, inventor and comic-strip author Athelstan Spilhaus, who - alarmed by the growing environmental crisis in 1960's America, gathered a team of committed experts to plan a domed city for 250,000 people whose futuristic technology and innovative design would eradicate the pollution and waste of the modern city, and lead the way toward 21st-Century urban life.

But before the city of the future broke ground on a virgin site in isolated northern Minnesota, rural citizens and mistrustful environmentalists rose up in protest, doubtful of its pollution-free promises.

Panelists include:
- Chad Freidrichs, making The Experimental City documentary.
- A Duluth City planner, Duluth's comprehensive plan and perspectives on future cities.
- Tom Beery, Minnesota Sea Grant resilience specialist, the need for experimental cities.
