Kirtan - an ancient participatory music experience, and one of the oldest sacred music traditions of the world is part of Bhakti yoga, or the Yoga of devotion. Have you wondered why we chant at the beginning and end of our practice? To pay our respects and invite in the divine. The true essence of Bhakti Yoga is explored through call-and-response singing. These Bhajans or songs can be as simple as a mantra or complex lyrical tales. Essentially we can think of Kirtan as another form of Meditation carrying us effortlessly to a place of quiet, and stillness without the work of mentally quietening the mind. Kirtan calls upon sacred energies through ancient Sanskrit, as well as Hindi and Tamil, which serve to remove obstacles, and bring us back to the center of our being.
