About Eco-charcoal Limited is a renewable energy startup company located at the foothills of Mount Kasigau, Taita-Taveta County, Coast Province, Kenya.
Eco-charcoal Limited cover
Description Eco-charcoal Limited is located between both Tsavo National Parks, at the foothills of Mount Kasigau, in a region which has been identified as a hotspot for biodiversity, especially forest biodiversity, by Conservation International and which is particularly under threat from slash and burn traditional agriculture and unsustainable charcoal production

The 10 hectares dryland forest sustainably produces clean, safe, organic eco-charcoal briquettes by using an innovative process in order to fight poverty effectively, reduce deforestation, land degradation and mitigate climate change.

The main objective is to transform Eco-charcoal Limited into a socially responsible, ecologically sustainable and economically viable company.

The community benefits from the project by getting job opportunities, especially for women in Kasigau, green awareness on deforestation and climate change, accessing healthy and non-toxic sustainable fuel energy for cooking and heating. Using our eco charcoal briquettes means significantly reducing indoor pollution and time-consuming for women and children instead of collecting the firewood.
Products Our eco-charcoal briquettes are made from pruned branches which are dried, carbonized and mixed with a natural binder. We do not collect charcoal dust from cut wood or industrial waste as opposed to the majority of briquette companies in Kenya. We are only using charred finger-sized hardwood branches pruned from trees left standing so that new branches can be harvested the following year. We are also extensively planting indigenous trees in the forest. Our process is fully integrated from the production of renewable wood in our forest to the final product, the briquette.
Rather than cutting down a whole tree, our methodology means trees and shrubs are only pruned to obtain wood stock through clipping. This ensures quick regeneration and the possibility to re-harvest the following year, even after 6 months. Our methodology is also helping to reduce soil erosion, deforestation and mitigate climate change. By using our eco charcoal briquettes which produce less smoke as compared to bush charcoal or firewood, we help mitigate climate change through reduced greenhouse gas emission that result into global warming. Our consumers are able to cook with a non-toxic fuel by using our eco-charcoal briquettes. We are also protecting the natural habitat for the wildlife by not cutting down the trees and we are constantly planting trees.
