|About||Field to Fork Program Charlotte, NC|
The Field to Fork Program promotes child wellness by growing a healthy pizza garden with elementary age children.
The program brings gardening, nutrition and culinary education to Charlotte children. Each year, Field to Fork selects local elementary schools to participate in the program. Raised bed gardens are initiated for schools that do not already have a garden. Participating schools grow pizza gardens with vegetables and herbs including spinach, tomatoes, peppers, basil, oregano and more. Children grow and harvest their produce and take it to Fuel Pizza to make healthy, vegetable pizzas on whole-wheat crust.
Objectives for participants of the program include:
- identifying key components of gardening
- understanding how a vegetable pizza meets the MyPlate dietary guidelines
- identifying key ingredients in all-natural pizza dough
- creating a healthy pizza with vegetables from their own school garden
Field to Fork aims to help children make healthy, informed choices at home as a result of the healthy eating education and experiences provided in this program.
