It looks like a bookstore, it feels like a bookstore, it is a bookstore. But the longer you stay the more you realize that it's more than a bookstore.
Founded in 1994 as Great Basin Books, Floating Island Books is perhaps the finest little bookshop in the interior American West. Its owner and proprietor, Michael Sykes, founded Floating Island Publications in 1976 and published 53 titles under that imprint over the next 22 years. Floating Island Books is the seventh bookstore Mr. Sykes has established since the first, Punta de los Reyes, in Point Reyes Station, West Marin County, California, in 1969. Floating Island Books is located in Cedarville, in the far northeastern corner of California, up against the tri-border region with Oregon and Nevada. Specializing in high quality fiction, poetry, photography, art, natural sciences, regional and geographical history of the Great Basin, Native American studies, Western Americana, rare and unusual books and first editions. The key features of the bookshop are its ambiance, warmth, comfort, and opportunities to browse and relax. It is located in the heart of Cedarville, on the back road high desert highway between the Pacific Northwest and Gerlach, Nevada, home of Burning Man, and points further south. Once you've visited Cedarville and the Surprise Valley, you'll return again and again. Hours are flexible and creative. Call ahead to be sure, or play it by ear and be surprised. If closed, don't hesitate to call the owner at home, which is just around the corner, 530 279 2766, and he may be there in a flash.
