Goodguys Vintage Drag Racing cover
Description While we didn’t write the book on vintage drag racing, Goodguys wrote a large portion of the popular sport’s history. The Goodguys Vintage Racing Association spent over two decades planning, promoting, spending, scheming and staging some rip-roarin’ ¼ mile speed contests in California, Indiana, Ohio and other states aimed at capturing drag racing’s glory years. Through tireless efforts and development of strict rules under the Vintage Racing Associates banner (VRA) we accomplished our goals to recreate drag racing’s past magic and more. We made the rules (approved and used by SFI and used by the NHRA Museum for their vintage drag events) and laid the foundation for today’s biggest events and most popular classes.

Though our late founder Gary “Goodguy” Meadors first staged vintage drag racing events in 1987 at Baylands Raceway in Fremont, CA and Seattle International Raceway, it was 1989 and the creation of the Jim Davis Memorial Drags/Brent Davis Benefit at Sears Point Raceway that really got the ball rolling. Things only accelerated when Goodguys recreated the historic March Meet Fuel & Gas Championships at Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield during the spring of 1994. The event had been left for dead but was painstakingly restored to its former luster. Today – it is the premier event in the sport and we would like to think it’s because we built and the racers supported it!

For a period of 12 years (1994-2006), Goodguys staged the nation’s premier point’s series for vintage drag racers at major west coast dragstrips. We called it the West Coast Championship Series. It was glorious. It was competitive. It captivated race fans and it gave the sport much needed stability. It was SO, MUCH, FUN! We learned that this country had a bunch of die-hard, wildly passionate drag racers willing to spend and do whatever it took to haul ass in style.

Goodguys continues this rich heritage and legacy with our current day vintage drag racing events. Ranging from one-night-only nitro-
