Green Key is an international eco-label for hotels and other tourism sites present in 56 countries with around 2,600 establishments awarded.
Tourism activities have a major impact on the environment. Green Key was created to educate and raise awareness among owners and managers of tourism and leisure establishments of the possibility for and necessity of running responsible businesses.
Rewarding tourism facilities helps decrease the environmental impact of each overnight stay. It also contributes by training managers and staff on sustainable management practices. Lastly, and it is the largest target, tourists are provided with environmental information.
Green Key is an international ecolabel for the leisure industry, created in 1994 in Denmark and adapted in 1998 in France, becoming in 2003 the Fifth programme of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).
