|Mission||To encourage the recycling of furniture and household effects that can be reused by disadvantaged families or individuals.|
The Hamilton Furniture Initiative is a registered Scottish Charity (No.023969) constituted in 1995 and is completely funded by South Lanarkshire Council.
The main objective of our project is to encourage the recycling of furniture and household effects that can be reused by disadvantaged families or individuals in South Lanarkshire.
We collect donations of all types of furniture and then supply what we regard as 'essential items' such as sofas, beds, wardrobes and electrical white goods, to such disadvantaged groups referred to us by authorised referral agencies. All our items are cleaned, tested for safety and delivered to our client groups on a free loan basis.
However, any furniture pieces donated to us that do not form part of our 'core item list' such as antiques, period/unique furniture etc, are auctioned online through eBay to help raise funds for the entire project.
The charity has indeed many benifits for the South Lanarkshire district including social, environmental and economical. By providing the underprivileged with free quality furniture, our service significantly helps improve people's living standards, which in turn helps relieve poverty in the local area as a whole.
Our work also greatly reduces the occurrences of illegal 'fly tipping' in the region and helps ease the unnecessary amounts of waste being added to our already overburdened landfill sites. This not only contributes to maintaining and preserving the environment, but also creates substantial cost savings for the local economy as landfill expenses and avoidable bulk item collections are considerably lowered.
In addition, by helping minimise the demand for landfill, we go some way in assisting the country achieve the high percentage waste recycling targets set by the National Government and the European Union.
