Every other year Leadership Jackson Hole, a class of 24 local professionals, is tasked with creating a project that will improve the community. This year LJH is producing the #HereForYouJH campaign to destigmatize issues surrounding mental health.
Wellness is about far more than our physical health. Mental health is an integral part of being and living well, yet one in five people are affected by mental illness. They often suffer in silence due to a negative social stigma that surrounds mental health. There are more than 200 classified forms of mental illness, ranging from mild depression or anxiety to severe cases of bipolar disorder or schizophrenia.
A mental illness causes mild to severe disturbances in thought and/or behavior, making it challenging to cope with life’s ordinary demands and routines. Mental health issues are often a reaction to environmental or emotional stresses, genetic factors, biochemical imbalances or a combination of these.
Extreme emotions or excessive worry, fear, or social withdraw are signs to seek help. With proper care and treatment many individuals learn to cope or recover from a mental illness or emotional disorder. Lifestyle and wellness factors play a significant role in reducing instances of compromised mental health.
If you or someone you know needs help, call or text the Jackson Hole warm line at 307-203-7880 where professionals are available to direct you to local mental health providers. The warm line is staffed Monday thru Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. If after hours or in an emergency, there will be instructions directing you for more immediate assistance.
By supporting each other we can normalize mental health issues and eliminate the stigma surrounding them. We are here to listen, we are here to help, we are #HereForYouJH.
