Mission |
The staff of The John Heinz Child Development Center is committed to providing high quality child care coupled with enriching educational opportunities for each child. Our goal is to empower each of them to develop emotionally, intellectually, and socially. Many characteristics lead to a high quality care and education for infants, toddlers and preschoolers. Our program is based on acceptable theories of child development; and our practices, activities, and assessment of each child (looking at total child -- all aspects of growth, development, and learning). The physical environment is safe, healthy, and contains a variety of toys and materials that are both stimulating and familiar. Children are able to select activities and materials that interest them because children learn best by being actively involved. Our staff show special respect for each child and interact with each in caring ways. Staff have knowledge of children, and child development, and regularly participate in professional development activities. Family members are encouraged to participate in our program. The Center is an open and welcoming place for all children and adults. We strive to be aware of the diversity and giftedness that exists in Pittsburgh’s culture; we embrace the differences that gender, race, ethnicity, and ability bring; and we strive to enrich our children from this treasure. Goals for the program have been created in order to achieve our philosophy. Our goals are: To provide a safe and nurturing environment for children to learn and develop To model respect for self and others, including children, families and staff To foster independence through daily activities To encourage family involvement in program To provide information and services to families and children according to their needs |
