Kaalo.101's mission is to create an open, non-commercial, free and creative space to work, experiment, exhibit and discuss. A mixture between a gallery, working space, social hub and simply a home. We feel a safe, diverse and connective community between global and local, but also traditional and contemporary ideas, is what Kathmandu misses out at the moment. We want to forge a connection through art.
In Nepal’s current artistic climate, aspiring local artists struggle to find spaces to exhibit their work and get access to local and global art markets. Many face rejections from the establishment due to their styles and political and social positions, an unfortunate symptom of working within a transcultural and evolving, but yet conservative setting. Each artist’s visionary, contemporary, and individual styles stem from social backgrounds, the streets and their struggles. We are ready to embrace this and stand with them in solidarity.
Kaalo.101 collects and archives contemporary and young Nepalese art with critical research on each piece and artist, giving artists the opportunity to express and address their experiences with public and international attention.
We think this approach is long overdue.
Within the group and gallery not only artists, but also the local community and other social community-based and grassroots organizations are involved and shape the project together with us. Several educational programs are included and a must for our concept. Our aim is to create a diverse community and a safe space, where people feel free to express themselves.
Kaalo.101's home base is located in a traditional Newari house in Nagbahal, which embraces the connection between the traditional and contemporary, old and new, including an artists' and friends' residency.
