The Lower St. Croix Valley Community Foundation Board has decided to dedicate all of our efforts to rebuilding the Lower St. Croix Trail, a key asset that connects our communities.
Over the years the Trail has been a great asset for all who walk, run, skate or bike on it. And we all know that it is in rough shape. We think it is time to rebuild it, and our Community Foundation is striving to make this happen.
We have GOOD NEWS about the TRAIL along the lower St. Croix Valley.
Washington County has approved a budget to rebuild most of the trail in 2017. The majority of this Trail is in the County Road right-of–way of County Road 18.
The Board of the Lower St Croix Community Foundation worked hard to make this happen. We organized presentations to each of the 5 cities and obtained City Council resolutions supporting rebuilding of the trail and worked directly with the Washington County Parks Department and the Engineering Department to reinforce the value of reconstructing our trail. Washington County District 3 Commissioner Gary Kriesel has become an important ally in our work with Washington County’s decision to redo the trail. There's still work to be done! Part of the trail is NOT in the County Right-of-Way so the County reconstruction will not cover this portion. This includes the bridge over the creek in Afton and the bridge trial entry and exits. The Lower St Croix Community Foundation continues to raise private funds to compete this part of the trail. Consider helping with a small donation - this is OUR community and our treasured resource.
Eventually, we'd like to connect our trail to other trails. The Lower St. Croix Valley Community Foundation is also working to collaborate with other trails that could connect to our trail. These include the trail proposed from Prescott to the Hastings Bridge, a proposed trail through Hudson, and the potential to connect to Stillwater and the Brown Creek Trail.
