|About||Loving Kindness in movement, massage, and meditative practices.|
Ann Marie created Maitri Living as her expression of loving kindness in the world. Maitri means unconditional friendliness for self and others. Using dance, somatic movement practices, and relaxation massage, Ann Marie helps others develop trusting, joyous, and compassionate relationships with their bodies. The embodied presence that results helps students enrich body, heart and mind connections with self and community.
Cracked open by a Hollyhock Tribal Dance experience in 1998, Ann Marie embraced dance as a means of expansion and connection in life. As a Nia Technique instructor she developed her interest in the long-term neuro-protective elements of dance as exercise. As a student of Alexander Technique and BodyMind Psychotherapy, she gained personal experience of the immediate benefits of mindful movement for mental and emotional health, learning to lean into the support of her own body’s capacity to restore itself. Continuing to deepen her journey with expressive dance practices such as 5Rhythms, and seeking out learning experiences with other embodied dance teachers, such as Anna Halprin, Ann Marie refreshes her personal movement practice while enriching her teaching with an expanding movement vocabulary and knowledge base. Weaving together these practices, Ann Marie shares them with students in uplifting and joyous movement classes.
In 2013 Ann Marie began offering relaxation massage in her cozy studio in Cumberland. Weaving together elements of Alexander Technique and Embodiment Practice with her massage techniques, she developed Maitri Massage. This is a deep listening practice for body and heart, and clients often experience emotional release as well as physical relief.
