Mitchell Farm Equine Retirement cover
Mission Mitchell Farm Equine Retirement, Inc. is dedicated to providing a safe and comfortable retirement alternative for aged and infirm horses
to live out their lives, and offering educational opportunities to the public on senior equine care and management.
Description Mitchell Farm currently owns 25 retired horses. They are no longer asked to bear human weight or do work of any kind. They are pastured and stabled, fed and cared for by staff and volunteers for the rest of their comfortable lives. Mitchell Farm provides for the on-going expense of their full-care including veterinary and farrier care. This effort represents a viable way to address the issue that plagues the older and infirm horse: that of being kept for a use that is inappropriate for its age and condition.

The overriding accomplishment for each year is to raise the funds necessary to give top level care for the horses. Additionally, in 2010, we held a successful capital campaign that raised enough money to add an additional 4-stall shed row barn that will allow an up-grade to the stall facilities.

The new year of 2011 has already seen a grant for and the installation of a solar energy generation system that will generate enough electricity to cover the needs of the entire farm. Another goal for this year is to achieve accreditation through the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries. In order to qualify, among other requirements, we will need to install a fire alert system in the barn.
